6) Setting Up/Managing Small Groups

During our Reconstruction Unit, students were tasked with reading through 3 different stories relating to 3 different areas of Reconstruction such as racist groups, Jim Crow Laws and Black codes. This lesson started as a whole group where I provided an example of college-level notes to show students that taking Cornell notes is very beneficial when it comes to organization. As a whole group we then read the Black Codes section as a whole group and filled out the outline as a whole group. Then students got into groups of 2-3 and read the other 2 sections while also filling in the outline. As a whole group, we then went over the outline together and reinforced the fact that Cornell notes are the most efficient way to take notes and stay organized.
