1) Leading Group Discussions
During our reconstruction unit, students were introduced to the different proposals regarding moving forward with the readmission of Confederate states back into the Union. Reading each proposal with the whole group while re visiting the main points of each proposal after, students filled out the open-ended questions on the back with their opinions. Students then were allowed to share what proposal they picked and why, even fostering some internal debate in the classroom between students when disagreeing on the proposals. This not only fosters open minded thinking as competing views are being shared but also fosters a better overall classroom environment, where all students feel comfortable enough to share their perspectives and opinions.
