2) Modeling Content, Practices, Strategies

During the Civil War Unit, students were asked to annotate and break down multiple primary sources throughout the unit. The emancipation proclamation serves as a very good example of how to use strategies to break down primary sources for students and provide better overall comprehension of not only the content of the primary source itself, but also how it relates to the unit. After reading the Emancipation Proclamation with the whole class, I introduced SOAPSTone on the whiteboard for the first time. This not only facilitates whole group discussion about the different sections, but allows students to use SOAPSTone for the rest of their academic career when reading or using primary sources.
